Every January, my phone goes quiet. Not because people stop thinking about renovations — they think about them constantly during the long Niagara winter — but because most homeowners assume winter is the wrong time to renovate.
This assumption is costing them time and money.
The Winter Advantage for Interior Renovations
Here is the reality: a kitchen renovation, bathroom renovation, or basement finishing project has absolutely zero weather dependency. The work happens entirely inside your home. Whether it is minus 15 or plus 30 outside is irrelevant to the tile going on your shower wall or the cabinets being installed in your kitchen.
What is relevant is the business cycle of the renovation industry, and winter is when that cycle works in your favour.
Faster Scheduling
Spring and summer are peak season. By March, most reputable contractors in the Niagara Region have their schedules booked through July or August. In January, that same contractor likely has availability within 2-4 weeks.
At JVR Complete, our winter schedule is consistently more flexible than our spring-summer calendar. Starting your project in winter means earlier completion and less time living in renovation chaos.
Shorter Material Lead Times
Cabinetry manufacturers, countertop fabricators, and tile distributors experience the same seasonal surge. A cabinet order placed in April may take 10-12 weeks; the same order placed in January may arrive in 6-8 weeks. Countertop fabrication appointments are easier to book. Specialty tile orders from Toronto distributors ship faster.
Better Attention to Your Project
When a contractor has three projects running simultaneously in the summer rush, your project competes for attention. In winter, when many companies are running one or two projects, you get fuller dedication and more consistent daily progress.
Some Supplier Discounts
While not universal, some material suppliers and showrooms offer winter promotions to move inventory. I have seen kitchen cabinet lines offer 10-15 percent off during January and February sales events. Flooring distributors sometimes run similar promotions.
Addressing Winter Renovation Concerns
”Will it be too cold with doors and windows open?”
For interior renovations, exterior doors and windows rarely need to be opened for extended periods. Dust containment and debris removal are managed with interior protection, plastic barriers, and end-of-day cleanups. Your home’s heating system continues to operate normally.
The only exception: if your project involves installing new windows or cutting a new exterior opening, those specific tasks need above-freezing temperatures for proper insulation and sealing.
”What about moisture from drywall and paint?”
Drywall compound and paint cure properly in heated interior environments. In fact, the lower humidity of winter air (with heating systems running) can actually accelerate drying times compared to humid Ontario summers.
”Will suppliers be closed for the holidays?”
Showrooms and suppliers are typically closed for a week between Christmas and New Year’s. Beyond that, they operate on normal schedules through winter. Material selection and ordering can happen in November and December, with construction starting in January.
The Financial Case for Winter Renovation
Beyond scheduling advantages, there is a financial argument. Renovation costs in Ontario have been increasing 3-8 percent annually. A kitchen renovation that costs $60,000 in January costs $62,000 to $65,000 by the following spring. Starting sooner is literally cheaper.
Additionally, if your renovation increases your home’s value, you benefit from that increased value for an additional 3-6 months compared to waiting for spring.
