Modern Kitchen Transformation
Complete gut renovation of a dated 1990s builder-grade kitchen into a contemporary open-concept showpiece with waterfall quartz island, custom two-toned cabinetry, and integrated lighting design.
Before & After
The Design Challenge
The original kitchen was walled off from the dining and living areas, creating a dark, cramped space that did not reflect the homeowners' lifestyle. A load-bearing wall separated the kitchen from the main living space, and the existing layout wasted valuable square footage on an oversized pantry closet and poorly positioned appliance placement.
Our Solution
Jon designed an open-concept layout after consulting with a structural engineer to replace the load-bearing wall with a concealed LVL beam. The new kitchen features a 10-foot waterfall quartz island as the centrepiece, two-toned cabinetry (warm walnut lowers with matte white uppers), a full-height porcelain backsplash with book-matched veining, undercabinet LED lighting, and a custom pantry wall with soft-close pull-out drawers.
The Full Story
This Oakville kitchen had not been updated since the home was built in 1996. The homeowners, a young professional couple, had purchased the home for its location and lot size but knew the kitchen needed a complete transformation. When they contacted JVR Complete, they had a clear vision: a bright, modern, open-concept kitchen that could handle serious cooking and casual entertaining.
Jon's first recommendation was to remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room — a change the homeowners had not considered. The structural assessment confirmed it was load-bearing, requiring an engineered LVL beam spanning the full 16-foot opening. The result transformed the entire main floor, creating sight lines from the kitchen through the dining area to the living room and rear windows.
The island became the kitchen's design anchor. At 10 feet long with a 24-inch waterfall edge on both ends, it provides seating for four, a prep sink, and abundant storage. The quartz top features a dramatic marble-look pattern with gold veining that connects visually to the champagne gold hardware throughout. Below, the island is finished in warm walnut to contrast the matte white upper cabinetry.
The backsplash was a signature JVR Complete detail: large-format 24"x48" porcelain panels with continuous veining, book-matched to create a flowing pattern across the 12-foot span. The result looks like natural marble but requires zero maintenance. Undercabinet LED lighting in warm white (3000K) illuminates the backsplash and work surfaces, creating a layered lighting effect that is both functional and atmospheric.
Key Features
"Jon suggested changes we never would have considered — especially removing that wall. The kitchen is now the heart of our home. The tile work is absolutely flawless, and the island is the centrepiece of every dinner party."
