Renovation During COVID: How We Adapted and What We Learned

The pandemic changed how renovations happen — from contactless consultations and staggered crew schedules to supply chain disruptions. Jon shares how JVR Complete adapted.

The spring of 2020 forced every business in Ontario to adapt or stop. For the renovation industry, the challenge was particularly acute: our work happens inside other people’s homes. Social distancing in a 40-square-foot bathroom is not physically possible. And yet, homeowners stuck in their houses were more motivated than ever to improve the spaces they now occupied 24 hours a day.

Here is how JVR Complete navigated the pandemic, and what we learned that permanently improved how we work.

The Initial Shutdown

When Ontario declared a state of emergency in March 2020, construction was initially classified as non-essential and halted. This left active projects mid-stream — kitchens with no countertops, bathrooms without tile, basements with exposed framing.

We communicated immediately with every active client. We secured job sites to prevent damage. And we waited.

When residential construction was permitted to resume in phases, we had protocols ready.

Our COVID Safety Protocols

We developed a comprehensive safety approach that respected both public health guidelines and the comfort level of our clients:

  • Daily health screening for all crew members before entering any home
  • Mask requirements whenever working in occupied spaces or within proximity of household members
  • Designated work zones with plastic barriers separating the construction area from living spaces
  • Staggered scheduling to minimize the number of workers on site at any given time
  • Enhanced cleaning of high-touch surfaces at the end of each workday
  • Contactless consultations using video calls and detailed photo documentation for initial assessments
  • Separate entry points where possible, using rear or side doors to keep crew traffic separate from family traffic

What the Supply Chain Taught Us

The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the global supply chain that affected every renovation project in 2020 and beyond:

  • Cabinet lead times stretched from 6-8 weeks to 14-20 weeks
  • Specialty tile from European manufacturers became unavailable for months
  • Lumber prices spiked dramatically (2x4 prices tripled at peak)
  • Plumbing fixtures, especially from overseas manufacturers, experienced delays of 3-6 months
  • Countertop fabrication backlogs extended wait times

We adapted by building longer material lead times into our project planning, ordering critical materials before demolition rather than during construction, and maintaining relationships with multiple suppliers so we could source alternatives when primary suppliers were out of stock.

The Home Office Surge

Perhaps the most lasting impact of the pandemic on our industry was the explosion in home office renovation demand. Families who had spent three months working from kitchen tables and bedroom corners realized they needed dedicated workspace.

We converted spare bedrooms into proper offices with built-in desks, custom shelving, and soundproofing. We finished basements with home office suites that included separate HVAC zones and dedicated electrical circuits. We even converted detached garages into insulated, heated workspaces.

This demand has not subsided. Remote and hybrid work is permanent for many Niagara residents, and the home office has become a standard feature request in our renovation consultations.

Permanent Improvements to Our Process

Several pandemic-era changes proved so effective that we have kept them permanently:

Virtual initial consultations: For homeowners who prefer it, we offer video-call consultations before the in-person site visit. This allows us to understand the scope and vision before arriving, making the on-site consultation more productive.

Enhanced dust and containment protocols: The rigorous dust containment practices we implemented for health safety also improved the renovation experience. Clients appreciated the cleaner, more contained work environment, and we have maintained those standards.

Earlier material ordering: We now order long-lead materials as soon as designs are finalized, well before demolition begins. This practice, born from necessity during supply shortages, prevents delays and is simply better project management.

Better communication cadence: Daily photo updates and weekly progress summaries, which we started to compensate for limited in-person interaction, are now standard practice on every project.

The Takeaway

The pandemic was challenging for everyone. But it forced us to think critically about every aspect of how we deliver renovations, and the result is a better, more refined process.

If you are planning a renovation in the Niagara Region, contact JVR Complete to experience the improved process we have built — cleaner, more organized, better communicated, and delivered to the same uncompromising quality standard that has defined our work since 2014.
